In Aperture/Iris I employ cinematic formal techniques. Rapid zooms, freeze frames, whip pans, and abrupt shifts of aural perspective undermine a sense of perceptual stability. Mechanistic cuts rupture smooth timbral blossoms as though the piece is a record I have scratched; as though it bears the scars of some botched technological birth.
Commissioned by Calithumpian Consort, Aperture/Iris was premiered at Williams Hall in Boston, Massachusetts on April 5th, 2010.
